  • Obama Trashes Special Olympics on Tonight Show
    Friday, March 20, 2009
President Obama Joked About Being a Bad Bowler: "It's Like the Special Olympics"

Obama, the first sitting president on "The Tonight Show", may end up being the last one to do so.

Obama, taping the Tonight Show on Thursday afternoon, attempted to be funny with the Jay Leno, and ended up insulting the disabled.

The president talked about how he's gotten better at bowling and has been practicing in the White House bowling alley. Obama said that he bowled a 129.

"That's very good, Mr. President," Leno said sarcastically.

It's "like the Special Olympics or something," the president said.

Referring of course to the very good program that allows persons with disabilities to participate in Olympic like activities.

The White House said the president did not intend to offend anyone.

"The president made an off-hand remark making fun of his own bowling that was in no way intended to disparage the Special Olympics," White House deputy press secretary Bill Burton said. "He thinks the Special Olympics is a wonderful program that gives an opportunity for people with disabilities from around the world."

It seems like the President has had to make a lot of excuses about "not intending to offend" lately, between Britain's Prime Minister, and now the Special Olympics.

Can you just imagine if President Bush had said this. The media would have had a field day. Instead there was mediocre coverage at best.

In my opinion this is how Obama really thinks about people who are "beneath" him. He probably makes these off color remarks on a regular basis so it was easy for him to "slip".

I'm sure he didn't intend to make the remark consciously, but sometimes the sub-conscious is very powerful.

He can apologize all day, but let's face it folks, this is how he really feels.

It seems obvious that mental disability has not touched Barack Obama's life personally. He should be more in tune with the fact that disabilities such as autism are at an alarming rate of 1 in every 115 children born in the U.S.. He is in a "bubble". He needs to realize these individuals are a large part of the population and the needs of these children as they enter adulthood will be tremendous. He needs a reality check, and a little compassion. His comment on Jay Leno was quite immature and distasteful.
